Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2024.03.08240cm / Partly Cloudy

It was a calm, cloudy morning with the sun shining through. I spoke to a father from Tochigi Prefecture (pictured, right), who told me, “I love your site. My son (pictured, left) will compete in the 2024 Morishita Jintan Osaka Junior Mogul Competition on the Rabbit Course tomorrow and the day after. We have a trampoline at home for air practice.” His son added emphatically, “I’m going to win!”

On the Mogul Course (pictured), located on the second half of the Highway Course, a group of children, who I assume will be competing in tomorrow’s competition, were practicing. Interestingly, the Highway Course was groomed from top to bottom with a firm, fine-grained granular snow surface; not the powder or wet snow I might have expected.

The Satomi Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Central Slope had moderately firm, groomed granular snow conditions as well. By around 10:00 a.m. the snow surfaces began to loosen up a bit, but remained easy to ski. I had a conversation with two visitors from Tokyo and Hakuba (pictured) that said, “We love your site! The conditions are great for practicing”.

A father from Shizuoka Prefecture greeted me and asked if I was with Snownavi. He told me, “I was looking for you, and I’m really glad I got to meet you. My son and I both had days off so we came out to snowboard. We’re staying at the Hakuba Alps Hotel.” The Wakaguri Forest Course (pictured), which is located in a shady area, was groomed with a moderately firm, granular snow base.
