Madarao REPORT

2024.03.27190cm / Partly Sunny

There are only four days left in the winter season at Madarao Kogen Ski Resort. With rain falling during the day yesterday, I thought it would be full spring skiing conditions today, but cold weather returned last night and snow began to fall, making the upper portion of the resort look like the peak winter season. Since the No. 13 Single Lift closed on 3/25 (Mon.), I headed for the top of the No. 3 Lift.

I spoke with a man from Nagano City (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! My home mountain Togari Onsen closed on 3/24 (Sun.), so I came to Madarao Kogen since the snow looked good. Conditions are good and my board is sliding well on the groomed courses.” The Ocean View Course, which goes around the steep, ungroomed top portion of the Crystal Slope, is surrounded by forest, and today the first part (pictured) had a well-packed, groomed “powdery” wet snow surface, while the middle to last part featured well-packed wet snow. I enjoyed the feeling of skiing through the fog and past the rime ice-covered trees.

I crossed paths once more with two people from Yamanashi Prefecture, whom I met during my report on 1/16 (Tue.). They told me, “The World Cup Course first thing this morning was rough, with heavy new snow on top of an uneven surface. The groomers today are really nice though. The upper portion of Crystal, which had a series of well-packed wet snow undulations, had about 5 cm of fresh, wet snow, while Giant (pictured) had a moderately packed, easy-to-ski groomed wet snow base.

First thing this morning, I parked my car in the No. 1 Parking Lot in front of the Madarao Kogen Hotel, which was free of charge, and aimed for first tracks on Paradise (pictured). Madarao is open until 3/31 (Sun.), but this will be the last slope report of the season. Thank you very much for reading our reports this season, and we look forward to seeing you again next season!
