With the Yodel No. 1 Triple (1,386 m) and the Yodel No. 4 Pair (307 m) beginning operation on 12/13 (Sat.), the winter officially got underway at Akakura Onsen Ski Resort. Currently, skiing is possible on two courses: the Sekimi Slope and the Elegant Course. After parking at the free Akakura Parking Lot, which can accommodate up to 800 vehicles, guests cross the road and take the covered moving walkway (pictured) to access the Yodel No. 1 Triple lift station.

The Sekimi Slope may be short at just 300 m, but with a maximum pitch of 23 degrees, an average gradient of 20 degrees, and a generous 110 m width, it’s ideal for repeated practice laps. This morning, around 5 cm of new snow lay on top of a moderately firm, groomed moist snow surface. The snow felt slightly heavy, similar to the 10 to 15 cm of new snow that had built up in the ungroomed areas along the sides of the course.

I ran into two instructors from the Yodel Ski School (pictured) who said to me, “You’re taking our photo? Thanks! Today the slope has a well-set base, and the new snow on top is a bit heavy, but it’s easy to ski. By the way, how do you say ‘Have a nice day!’ in Japanese?” After that, we exchanged smiles and parted with a cheerful “Yoi ichinichi o!” before I left the area.
