The snow that had only been lightly swirling around the area in front of JR Hakuba Station had turned into a full-on snowfall by the time I arrived at Hakunori’s parking lot at 8 a.m. I met a skier from Ikeda Town (pictured) who told me, “I always read your reports. I’m planning to ski all the resorts with my HAKUBA VALLEY season pass, and today I came to Hakunori because there’s lots of new snow and it’s nice and quiet.”

“I’m always grateful for how well we’re looked after here. Skiing on my day off, I can’t help but think again just how good the snow and the slopes really are,” said a patrol member (pictured) I ran into while they were skiing on their own time. On both the Rabbit Course (pictured) and the Highway Course, well-packed powder grooming topped with 5 to 7 cm of light new snow let my skis run freely and build speed with ease.

I spoke with a member of the mogul course staff (pictured) who explained, “We started shaping the moguls at the end of the year and have been working on them steadily ever since. With a competition coming up next weekend, we’ll also be building a new mogul course on Rabbit.” With moguls of just the right size and firmness, the course was so inviting that it was hard to resist dropping in again and again.

Both the Satomi Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Central Slope were groomed with moderately firm powder, and I was able to link smooth, comfortable turns while gently parting through the 3 to 5 cm of light new snow on top. In the ungroomed sections of Satomi Central and Rabbit, the underlying base was almost completely smooth, and I was really able to enjoy the soft feel of the 15 to 20 cm of light new snow underfoot.
