Here it is—the crystal-clear, vivid blue sky known as “Sugadaira Blue.” At Uratataro Family, the Stage 3 Lift begins running at 8:00 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than usual, on weekends and holidays through 3/29 (Sun.) as part of the “Morning Ski” program. I spoke with a couple from Ueda City (pictured), who said, “We always read your reports! We’re season pass holders, and on weekends we come out for the Morning Ski program. Early mornings really do feel the best.”

Both Uratataro Family East and West (pictured) featured groomed snow with a nicely balanced softness and a powdery feel. My edges engaged cleanly, and my skis accelerated smoothly across the surface. Beyond the excellent slope conditions, the contrast of blue skies and white frost-covered trees made the scenery especially uplifting.

At the Smile Park in the Pine Beak area, which opened for the season on 1/20 (Tue.), three brothers from Ueda City (pictured) were happily at play. Their father (out of frame) told me, “We come to Smile Park every season, and today is our first visit this winter. It’s great being able to let the kids play here safely.”

Smile Park operates as a kids-only snow park with two sessions per day, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (¥1,200 per session for ages two and up). Inside the park is a 40m-long moving walkway (pictured), along with a wide selection of free snow-play equipment including snow striders, sleds, snow racers, tubes, shovels, and buckets.
