Early in the morning, the deck at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR was covered in a thick, snow-like frost—the result of overnight radiative cooling. On such chilly mornings, the heated indoor eat-in space (pictured) feels especially cozy. From the seats facing the large windows, you can relax and take in the autumn colors while enjoying a freshly baked croissant sandwich and a hot cup of coffee.

And the moment you step outside, the scenery and scale is breathtaking! Around 8:30 a.m., the sandan koyo (three-tiered autumn colors) briefly disappeared behind clouds, but by about 10:00 a.m., the full view spread out before me once again. Today, a thin veil of mist hung between the pure white snow on the summits and the vivid reds of the mid-slope foliage, giving the scene a uniquely soft and atmospheric beauty.

Day by day, the band of autumn colors has been descending further down the mountain, and the fall leaves can now be enjoyed in the area along the gondola line—from the summit station down toward the upper section of the former Paradise Slope. With the new gondola cabins featuring larger windows, the views are now far more dramatic than ever before. During the ride, I also had a clear view of Mt. Hiuchi (pictured, background), which saw its first snowfall on 10/28 (Tue.).
[Gondola]
The buna (Japanese beech) trees at the summit of Iwatake had just passed their peak yellow, though the kaede (maple) by the forest entrance (pictured) was brilliantly colored and had become a popular little photo spot. The Yoo-hoo! Swing, where you can soar out over the autumn scenery, was as popular as ever today. However, because time-slot tickets were being sold at the vending machines by the Guide Center, there were almost no lines at the site itself.
