Great news! The base has officially reached 100cm! As expected, and as hoped for, it has been properly dumping since last night, and up at Alps-Daira the dry snow was coming down hard, and a light wind was blowing. A member of the ski patrol that I talked to said, “We finally got a big snowfall. It’s definitely a relief.”

At times like this, I head straight for the steep, ungroomed powder slopes. Today as I dropped into the Technical Course, I found around 40cm of fresh, fluffy snow rose behind me in a big plume of of powder! The thin fog and densely falling snow made it difficult to see the snow surface and the boundary between the groomed and ungroomed snow, but there were still shouts of joy from all around.

There was 5 to 10cm of light, fresh snow on the groomed Panorama Course and the upper portion of Route 8 (pictured), as well as on the groomed half of the Grand Prix Course, and it was fun to cruise across the flat base while wading through the fresh snow. Although it was a weekday, visitors were quick to show up, and at around 9:30 a.m. the Toomi parking lots 1 and 2 were already full, while parking lot 3 was about 40% occupied.

On each of the groomed slopes, even as they began to fill up with tracks, the soft dry snow made it easy and enjoyable to link controlled, comfortable turns. In other news, the routes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and the lower portion of route 8 will reopen tomorrow, 12/22 (Fri.)! Depending on the snowfall over the next few days, the upper portion of route 1 should also be able to open.
