This morning a weak wind was blowing from the north, and snow started falling around 8:00 a.m. The 2nd NSD Kids Ski and Snowboard Competition took place yesterday, 2/24 (Sat.), and the Challenge Zero Kids Ski and Snowboard Giant Slalom Competition is on today, 2/25 (Sun.). The course for the competition has been changed from Ura Taro Kamoshika to Ura Taro Super Racer.

Course inspection started at 9:00, and the racers entered the course one after another to check the distance between the gates, the angles of the turns, etc… A father from Aichi Prefecture, whose seven and five-year-old children were competing on snowboards, commented, “The kids haven’t practiced for this competition… they’ve just been boarding for fun. It’s their first tournament, so I just want them to have a good time!”

Conditions were great on Shirogane Rinkan (pictured), Ura Taro Rabbit, and Taro Long, with groomed wet snow that had a powdery feel. Ura Taro Super Racer (2nd photo), Ura Taro Family West & East, Ura Taro Schi Heil, Shirogane Schwarz (4th photo), and Tengu Rinkan had a reasonably firm groomed base that was a mix of granular and wet snow, while Ura Taro and Tengu A had a nice, tightly groomed surface that was also mixed with granular and wet snow.

I caught up with an instructor from DSIJ, a national association of hearing impaired ski instructors, who was from Tokyo (pictured, second from left). He told me, “I love your site! We’re holding the 17th Annual Deaf Wanpaku Skiing and Snowboarding Class for elementary school students with hearing disabilities during this three-day weekend.”Afterwards, the students taught me the sign language for “thank you” and “fun.”
