Sugadaira REPORT

2024.02.27100cm / Snowy

It felt as bitterly cold as a January morning, and dry snow was falling while strong gusts of wind blew from the north. At times the blizzard-like conditions were so intense that they caused me to stumble. Due to the wind, all lifts except the Tengu Quad, Hinode Pair, Grand Lift, Wave Lift, Schneider Triple, Omatsu 3rd Pair, and Omatsu 6th Pair were out of service.

I spoke with four people from Tokyo (pictured) who were the first to board the Wave Lift, which started moving at 8:50 a.m., 20 minutes later than scheduled. They told me, “Today is our first of two days skiing. The winds are really strong, so this is our being blown by the wind pose.” When I ran into them again later, they said, “The snow quality is very good and it’s easy to ski!”

The Tengu Quad and Hinode Pair are located on south-facing slopes and were able to operate on time at 8:30 since they were shielded from the northerly winds. The ungroomed areas on the Tengu Slope (pictured) had a moderately firm surface covered in 15 to 20 cm of fluffy fresh snow! The groomed portion had a moderately soft wet snow surface that felt like powder and was topped with 1 to 3 cm of light, new snow. Both were extremely enjoyable to ski.

Ura Davos Skyline (pictured) and Heart-no-Mori had 1 to 5 cm of new wind-driven snow in spots, sitting atop a groomed mix of wet and granular snow. Ura Davos Wave also offered comfortable conditions, with 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow on the moderately firm, groomed wet snow base that had the feeling of powder.
