Every third Sunday of the month—when elementary school students can purchase a one-day lift ticket for half price (※¥1,750; on 2/15 this month)—Hakunori hosts a “Kids Event.” The lineup includes a snowmobile experience ride (pictured), complimentary servings of tonjiru (pork miso soup), and a buggy ride experience. The hugely popular snowmobile course ran round-trip from in front of Snow Drop to the midsection of the Hakunori Family Course.

Two large pots of tonjiru (pictured) were doled out to around 150 guests in less than an hour after the 10 a.m. start. The delicious, hearty soup was packed with pork, carrots, potatoes, long green onions, daikon radish, onions, konnyaku, shimeji mushrooms, and burdock root. With calm, warm weather throughout the morning, everyone was able to enjoy the soup, and the event, at a relaxed pace.

The snowmobile experience ride is open to children of elementary school age and younger, while the buggy ride (pictured) can be enjoyed by parents and children together. I met a family visiting from Gifu and Gunma prefectures (pictured) who told me, “We’re staying at the Hakuba Alps Hotel for two nights starting yesterday. We were lucky that our trip happened to fall on ‘Ski Kids’ Day.’ It felt strange—in a good way—to drive in a buggy on the slopes we usually ski.”

Next to the Kids Area, the “Wooden Sled Experience” (free to participate) was also held, following the previous running on 1/25 (Sun.). Temperatures rose so much during the day that some people were even in short sleeves. The Rabbit Course, Wakaguri Central Slope, and Wakaguri Forest Course had offered moderately firm moist snow grooming first thing in the morning that began softening on the surface level within the first 30 minutes.
