This morning, I met two guests from Tokyo (pictured) who told me, “We’ve been staying at the Hakuba Alps Hotel since yesterday. The snow quality is excellent, and it feels great to ski on. There isn’t much fresh snow, but we’re looking forward to today anyway.” Even before operations began, the temperature was already a relatively mild -1°C, and I found myself breaking a light sweat walking from the newly opened V4 parking lot up to the Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair.

The upper halves of the groomed Highway and Kamoshika Courses featured moderately firm powder grooming, while the north-facing lower half of the Highway Course (pictured) offered moderately soft powder grooming. Both were lightly topped with a thin layer of fresh snow. The slightly moist new snow created almost no resistance, allowing my skis to run fast and smoothly.

The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) and the Wakaguri Forest Course both featured moderately firm, groomed powder surfaces that were also skiing beautifully. The skier’s left side of the Rabbit Course had been sectioned off in preparation for the “Saitama Prefecture Moguls Championships” (PDF), scheduled for 2/14 (Sat.) & 2/15 (Sun.).

As the day went on, the clouds gradually cleared and it turned pleasantly warm. The Satomi Central Slope had a moderately firm, groomed powder surface topped with less than 1 cm of fresh snow first thing in the morning, but had softened by around 11 a.m., taking on a slightly moist texture. Even warmer weather is forecast for the weekend.
