We had the perfect plan to introduce the Slopes app: Sato-san from Monster Cliff, a test rider for THE DAY.HAKUBA (pictured, hereafter referrecd to as “T”), and myself would all meet at Iimori, split up and ski different areas, and then use Slopes to find each other again. However, the plan quickly fell apart since Sato-san was running seriously late. With warm temperatures expected to soften the snow quickly, we decided not to wait and headed out to start things off with just the two of us.

At one point, T pulled out his phone and launched the Slopes app, commenting. “It looks like Sato-san isn’t anywhere near the ski area yet.” Slopes shows the real-time location of friends you’ve added, making it easy to see where everyone is on the mountain. It also automatically records your total vert, cumulative distance, speed, and other stats.

Sato-san eventually made it up to Alps Daira, saying, “Sorry I’m late! I opened the Slopes app, checked where you were skiing, and rushed over. Glad we could meet up!” Incidentally, Slopes also displays course and lift names, and includes a safety feature that allows you to share your location with patrol and request emergency assistance with a single tap.

I myself have signed up and have been using the Slopes app. So here’s the plan: we’re launching the “Find the Snownavi Reporter” campaign. Use Slopes to track down a reporter on the mountain, come say hello, and the first 25 people to do so will receive a complimentary ticket valid for the Hakuba Norikura Aqua Oasis (worth ¥4,000) plus a commemorative photo together.
