The CARDIFF Splitboard Festival demo event took place yesterday and today at the base of the Kamoshika Course. I spoke with a snowboarder from Chiba (pictured left), visiting with his wife, who told me, “We always read Snownavi! I already own a splitboard from Cardiff’s current lineup. But after trying this solid board, I really liked how it felt… and now I kind of want one.”

At the demo, visitors could test both solid boards (standard, non-split snowboards) and splitboards, along with gear such as bindings and climbing skins. A group of four riders from the Minami-Shinshu area (pictured) told me, “We always read Snownavi! We came specifically for the Cardiff demo. We’ve already tried a few boards, but we’re going to swap boards again and head back out for another run.”

Today, the third Sunday of the month, also brought the final Ski Kids Day and Kids Event of the season. Light snowflakes drifted down as families enjoyed snowmobile rides, buggy rides, and free servings of pork miso soup. The buggy rides—also free—were just as popular as the snowmobiles. The wooden sled experience and the Cross Festa Pro event, however, were canceled due to poor conditions.

On both the Wakaguri and Satomi slopes, the groomed runs started the day already softened into chunky corn snow. On the south side of the Satomi Central Slope (pictured), patches of exposed dirt were beginning to spread near the entrance. Even so, the remaining snowpack looked sufficient to keep the slope skiable through 3/22 (Sun.), when the No. 8 Pair is scheduled to close—assuming some snow is redistributed.
