I found out yesterday morning that the resort’s closing date had been moved up to 3/29 (Sun.), but seeing how much the base area had melted from the rain that fell between the night before last and yesterday was still a shock. Temperatures were already high at 4°C when the lifts opened, so I started the day skiing without a jacket.

All three open runs—the Wakaguri Central Slope, the Rabbit Course, and the Hakunori Family Course—had groomed corn snow that had already softened slightly from the start. Thin snow coverage was starting to show in spots, not only on the Wakaguri Central Slope, but also on the Rabbit Course (pictured). In every case, however, those areas were easy to avoid while skiing.

I spoke with a skier from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, left), whose dog Luna (pictured, right) was geared up with goggles. He told me, “We always read Snownavi! (Woof!) I often come to Hakunori with her. As she gets older, she can’t run as many laps in a day, but I still want to bring her here while she’s healthy.”

On the Wakaguri Central Slope, snow pushed by the grooming machines had been piled up along the No. 4 Pair line (pictured). Over the final two days, this snow will be spread out as needed to maintain good surface conditions. Also, the Hakuba Alps Hotel (pictured, back right) will close on 3/31 (Tue.), and undergo major renovations to its guest rooms and public spaces. It is scheduled to reopen in December 2026 as “THE ALPS HOTEL HAKUBA.”
