The three-day weekend, just after the end of the rainy season in the Kanto-Koshin region on 7/18 (Fri.), featured sunny weather all three days. On the final day, 7/21 (Mon., national holiday), all trails at the Hakuba Iwatake MTB PARK were in smooth, dry, fast condition. With most elementary and junior high schools in the Kanto, Chukyo, and Kansai regions having started summer break, many families could be seen riding together on the Alps Downhill course (pictured).

The Mountain Carts (pictured, ¥2,000 per ride), which are even easier to ride than mountain bikes, were also extremely popular. All you have to do is steer with the handlebars and brake with both hands. The 1.4 km course runs from the summit down to the 5Sen South Lift station, and I enjoyed the refreshing highland air while feeling the bumps and vibrations as I sped across the ground.

Starting 7/18 (Fri.), the CHUMS RIDGE Private Decks (pictured, foreground, reservation required) is now open at CHUMS RIDGE. Rates are ¥4,000 for a half-day or ¥6,000 for a full day, with a capacity of up to six people per site. Each deck comes equipped with a CHUMS tent, tarp, table, and chairs. It’s the perfect private base for enjoying all the activities Iwatake has to offer.

At CHAVATY HAKUBA, limited-time menu items are now available as of 7/18 (Fri.). One of the highlights is the “Summer Lyrical Matcha Soda” (pictured, ¥680). I was curious what it might taste like, but it’s not strange at all—it’s delicious! The base flavor comes from the sweet and tangy Summer Lyrical variety of strawberries grown in Nagano, with subtle, refreshing notes of Uji matcha and lemongrass. Other items include “Kyoho Mint Tea Soft-Serve” (¥680) and “Kumazasa Scone” (¥400).
