Goryu47 REPORT

2024.01.07130cm / Snowy

Yesterday, 1/6 (Sat.), Goryu’s Dynamic Course was forced to close due to advancing snowmelt, making it impossible to ski all the way down to the base of the mountain. However, a powerful winter weather front moved in to the area early in the morning today, 1/7 (Sun.), and the entire ski resort was covered with modest amounts of fresh snow. Conditions were excellent on the Panorama Course (pictured), with about 10cm of fluffy new snow on top of the moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface.

The Grand Prix Course and the upper portion of Route 8 also had the same high quality powder snow as Panorama! On the upper portion of Route 8, I noticed some skiers playfully enjoying the great snow by riding up on the snow walls. I spoke with a couple from Shizuoka, who told me, “We came here to practice for the technical ski competition that will take place at Iimori. It’s been more than 10 years since we had our picture taken by a Snownavi reporter.” Afterwards they asked me how long Snownavi has been in business, and I was happy to report that this is our 25th year.

I saw a intriguing pair of blue skiers and was wondering if they were from Team Rescue, and that’s when I saw that the man holding them was none other than the age-defying 45-year-old Tomoyuki Yatsunami, Japan’s FIS Speed Ski Champion and the 20th ranked skier in the 2023 World Cup! He told me, “Today I’m here to test Team Rescue’s wax. The new products work well! The qualifying for the opening round of the World Cup in France will start on 1/26 (Fri.). I’ll give it my all!”

Because it was the middle day of a three-day weekend, the resort was busy straight from the morning. I was greeted by a group of four snowboarders (pictured) who commented, “The snow is really good and we’re having a lot of fun. We hope it will snow a lot tonight like the forecast is saying.” In other news, the Tree Riding Zone will open starting 1/8 (Mon.).
