For small children, the short, simple jaunt from “parking lot → center house → kids’ park” is quite appealing. At Kurohime, the parking area is located beside Cosmo Plaza on the valley side, and the sled-only area (pictured) sits just steps away on the mountain side. The area features a moving walkway, and today the area was freshly groomed, with a moderately soft, powder snow base.

Next to the sled-only area is the wide-open Kurohime Family Park. This area was also neatly groomed, with packed powder snow that was comfortably firm, and made it easy to slide. With it being a quiet weekday morning, kids were able to enjoy sledding and snow striders safely and leisurely.

I spoke with a father from Myoko City (pictured, back), who told me, “My daughter (pictured, front) can already snowboard, but this season she suddenly said, ‘I want to ski!’ I only snowboard myself, so I’m kind of figuring things out as I go.” For kids making their ski or snowboard debut, Kurohime Family Park is hard to beat.

Leo (pictured) and Blackbird were both fully groomed from end to end, andoffered well-set, easy-to-ski powder conditions. Monkey, Rabbit, and Dragon, where the trees sit closer along both sides, had groomed powder that was a bit softer, giving the snow a mellow feel. Light snowfall riding in on a northwesterly wind eased off around 10 a.m., and patches of blue sky gradually took over.
