The anticipated cold wave arrived right on schedule. This morning, dry snow was falling in earnest, driven by a strong, biting northerly wind. Before the resort opened, a group of three guests from Shiga Prefecture (pictured) told me, “We always read your reports. Our goal is to be featured on Snownavi at least once every season. Today, we’ll ski the Highway Course three or four times, then head over to the self-responsibility area on the south side.”

On the Highway Course, where the groomed surface consisted of firm, moisture-rich snow, light new snow had accumulated unevenly— between 0 and 5 cm up top and 4 to 5 cm lower down (pictured). I spoke with three guests from Osaka Prefecture (one pictured) who told me, “I always read your reports. We left home at 9 p.m. last night and drove straight here to ski. Tonight we’re staying at Hakuba Märchen House.”

At times the wind picked up sharply, whipping snow off the surface(pictured). The Rabbit Course had a firm, moisture-rich groomed surface that was topped with 0 to 4 cm of light new snow, and the “Morishita Jintan 2026 Osaka Prefecture Hakunori Moguls Competition” was continuing there for a second day. One elementary school competitor I met said, “I always read your reports! We’re the warmup act, but we’ll do our best.” A junior high school competitor added, “My dream is to compete in the Olympics someday!” (Due to a mistake on my part, I wasn’t able to include photos this time—sorry!)

The Wakaguri Central Slope and Satomi Central Slope (pictured) were topped with 2 to 7 cm of fresh snow, and groomed into firm, moisture-rich surfaces. Over the course of today and tomorrow, the cross course along the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair is hosting the “National Disabled Snowboard Championships & Supporters Cup.”
