This Sunday, 2/15, is “Ski Kids’ Day,” with lift tickets for elementary school students available at Hakuba Norikura for half price. On the same day, a free snowmobile experience (from 10 a.m., open to elementary school–age children and younger) and complimentary servings of tonjiru (pork miso soup) will also be on offer. This morning, the day started off with calm skies as the sun shone softly through thin cloud cover.

The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) was freshly groomed across its full width, and offered moderately firm powder conditions. With so few people out on this weekday, I was able to link turn after turn exactly as I wanted on the wide, flatly-groomed surface. The groomed Highway and Rabbit courses both featured excellent, well-packed powder bases that made me want to lap either the Alps No. 3 High-Speed Pair or the Alps No. 5 High-Speed Pair.

By the way, the procedure for riding the No. 11 Pair with skis or a snowboard has changed. Armbands (¥2,000) must now be purchased in advance through a dedicated app, then collected at the lift loading area on the day. As before, if you leave your skis or snowboard at the base, you may ride the lift for sightseeing with a valid lift ticket. At the No. 11 Pair unloading area, I spoke with a group of three guests from Nagano City who told me, “We always read your reports. We rode the No. 11 Pair for the first time today—the views are incredible!”

I ran into a skier who lives in Hakuba Village (pictured) who commented, “I always check Snownavi. I have the joint Hakunori & Cortina season pass, and today I brought my dog, Suru, skiing here for the first time. I’m glad she seemed happy—the snow and the weather are both fantastic today.” Suru energetically ran along the moderately firm, groomed powder on the Hakunori Family Course.
