Although heavy snow/blizzard conditions had been expected, thin sunshine broke through during the early morning hours. On Routes 5 and 6, the moderately firm, groomed packed-powder bases were topped with around 5 cm of light new snow. Combined with the fantastic feel of powder underfoot, the frost-covered trees along Line-C (pictured) were stunning, and my excitement grew as I gained elevation.

The opening to midsection of the lower part of Route 8 (pictured) was topped with 4 to 5 cm of light new snow that was also groomed into a moderately firm powder base, making for an enjoyable run through a striking white landscape. Toward the end of the lower section, the groomed snow became firmer, and the bottom of Route 1 had firm, groomed moist snow that included a few areas with the distinctive hard feel of machine-made snow.

The Hakuba 47 Snowboard School has been hosting the “Jr. & Beginner Slalom Competition” alongside Route 4 yesterday and today. Local riders from Hakuba Village (pictured) told me, “We’re members of the Hakuba Village Ski Club Snowboard Junior team. Today, first, third, and fifth-grade elementary students, along with a second-year junior high school student, are competing. Of course, we’re aiming to win every category!”
[Route 4]
Each competitor takes two runs, with the best time counting toward the results. Categories include elementary school grades 1–2, 3–4, and 5–6, junior high school students, beginner men, beginner women, and preschoolers. There was also a unique “Parents’ Division,” where parents compete using a combined time with their child. The awards ceremony, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in front of Restaurant ALICE, will see certificates and prizes presented to the top finishers.
