With a classic winter pressure pattern ushering cold air into the region, fine, slightly moist snow was falling at Madarao this morning. Utopia (pictured), which connects the No. 7 Parking Lot to the Super Quad base, had firm, groomed wet snow with a light dusting of fresh snow on top. I heard a beginner that took a tumble laugh and shout, “Oh, my butt hurts!”

I met a pair of students from Tokyo (pictured) who told me, “We often use Orion Tour to come snowboarding. This time a group of eight of us came out together, but we already got separated lol. It was warm yesterday, and today it’s white out conditions. We took the ‘Free Snowboard Beginner Lesson,’ but still can’t ride very well.”

First thing this morning, I rode the Super Quad and headed for Champion. Champion was groomed end to end, and featured a hard base, with 0 to 2 cm of slightly moist new snow scattered across the surface. Giant (pictured) also had firmly groomed wet snow with limited visibility due to thick fog, but the smooth, even surface made it comfortable and safe to ski.

The Carving Course (pictured) is narrower than Giant or Champion. Today, the trees around it were wrapped in rime ice and dense fog filled my field of vision, so I was careful to keep my speed in check as I skied down the firm groomed wet snow surface topped with 1 to 2 cm of slightly moist fresh snow. The fog remained thick through the day.
