The officially reported base depth, which stood at 210 cm on 2/20 (Fri.), has now dropped to 170 cm due to the recent warm temperatures, but Madarao still has plenty of snow on the ground. This morning, with a deep blue sky overhead, Paradise (pictured) offered groomed corn snow that was nicely set overall, though firmer in the shaded sections and already softening from the start in the sun-exposed areas.

Giant was freshly groomed just before the resort opened, and featured soft, loose corn snow. A man from Tokyo (pictured left, wearing pink) told me, “I usually ski in the Yuzawa area, but this is my first time back at Madarao in two years.” On Champion, I enjoyed sweeping views and smooth turns on fast, soft corn snow groomers that allowed my skis to run nicely.

Crystal (pictured) also had groomed corn snow with a surface that had begun to loosen, though the shaded area on the skier’s-right side remained more firmly set. Sky View, which connects over to Tangram, had a thicker, even softer layer of corn snow compared to the other runs. When I returned to Giant later, it was already crisscrossed with deep tracks.

The FreeRidePark (pictured) is currently set up with a 4 m kicker, 3 m tabletop, a mound, 9 m kicker, narrow box, 4 m up rail, donkey rail, 6 m rail (pictured), and 6 m box. There is ample spacing between features, making it easy to build speed and set up clean approaches. Even inside the well-maintained park, the snow surface was softened corn.
