This morning, after exiting the Toyota-Iiyama IC and driving about 10 minutes along Prefectural Route 96 (the Iiyama–Myoko Kogen Line), the mountain road that begins where you turn right toward Madarao was icy and slippery. It appears the snow that fell on 3/7 (Sat.) has remained due to the continued cold temperatures. It was another chilly morning with mostly cloudy but otherwise calm skies.

Champion (pictured) had well-set groomed wet snow with a powdery feel, and soft plumes of snow were sent up each time I set my edges. Those conditions allowed for smooth, confident speed, and because the slope stayed in the shade for much of the morning, the firm, high-quality surface held up nicely for quite a while.

Crystal (pictured) also offered firm groomed wet snow with that same powdery touch. The wide slope invited long, relaxed turns. By the way, the Mogul Course on the skier’s right side of the lower section of Giant will be reshaped on 3/9 (Mon.) and 3/10 (Tue.), and is scheduled to reopen on 3/11 (Wed.).

I spoke with an older brother from Tokyo (pictured, left), visiting with his younger brother, who told me, “We always read your reports. It’s our first time skiing at Madarao together. Yesterday, with a bit of fresh snow, we enjoyed the tree runs, and today we’re having fun cruising the groomers.” Reflecting the return of colder temperatures over the weekend, the upper slopes were once again coated in beautiful rime ice.
