Madarao is a solid choice if you’re into moguls. Today, under clear skies with a mild southerly wind that occasionally picked up in intensity, from Utopia (pictured) I could see clean, well-formed moguls stretching across the Giant course—from the upper section along the No. 3A Lift, through the midsection accessed by the Super Quad, and down to the lower section where the Mogul Course is located.

Deep moguls had set up across the ungroomed midsection of Giant (pictured). The surface had already softened into loose corn snow with no underlying firmness, making the moguls more approachable than they looked. On the lower part of Giant, as well as Carving, Champion, Shirakaba, Utopia, Paradise, and Beginner A and B, the groomers had already transitioned into soft corn snow from the start of the day.

At the same time, the midsection of Crystal (pictured) offered groomed corn snow that was still moderately firm. Visitor traffic was extremely light early on, and even after lapping twice via the No. 11 and No. 12 lifts, the surface remained smooth and largely untouched. Note that the No. 11, No. 12, and No. 15 lifts will close for the season on 3/22 (Sun.). (The No. 13 Lift has already shut down.)

I met a man from Saitama Prefecture (pictured, right) who told me, “I always read your reports! This season I’ve been working at a lodge at the base while enjoying snowboarding. On this final day, I’m riding with a friend from Australia (pictured, left) who I worked with, making some final memories together.” Sky View also had soft corn snow from the outset. In other news, access between Madarao and Tangram will remain open through 3/22 (Sun.).
