Today marked the running of the 19th All Japan Mogul Championships “Akakura no Ran.” Two of the first competitors to check in included a rider from Ishikawa Prefecture (pictured, right), who told me, “I always read Snownavi! This guy (pictured, left) is a legend—he’s competed in this event more times than anyone.” That rider, from Suwa City in Nagano (pictured, left), laughed and replied, “I use Snownavi all the time too! And what are you talking about? You’re the one with the most wins!”

This morning, dry snow blew through the air, and occasional north winds made it feel far colder than the official temperature of -1°C. Utopia A and B offered groomed moist snow with a light granular mix, topped by 3 to 5 cm of fresh snow. “Akakura no Ran” took place on the skier’s right side of Utopia A, from the midsection down through the lower part (pictured) of the course, which had been separated off for the event.

This long-running competition showcases snowboard mogul (uneven terrain) riding skills. Judges score riders based on three key elements: speed, turn technique, and stability. Course inspection began at 9 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 10 a.m., and the first qualifying runs started shortly afterward.

The snowfall that fell last night and into this morning refreshed conditions across the groomed runs. The Panorama Course, Family Course, Sekimi Slope, Elegant Course, Downhill Central Course, and Slalom Course all featured a groomed mix of granular and moist snow lightly dusted with fresh snow. Looking ahead, Utopia B will host Round 5 of the X-Festa 2026 Series and the 6th Annual Akakura Onsen Ski Resort Cup next weekend.
