Clear skies returned to the area, but so did the wind. Tight pressure gradients over Japan drove strong winds this morning, just as forecast, and both the gondola and Line-C ran were forced to operate at a reduced speed. That slower pace actually made it easier to shoot photos from the lift, including this one of a group of three (pictured) who called out to me saying, “Hey, Snownavi! Get us in the shot!”

At the top of Line-C, gusts were strong enough to push me off balance, and I started to worry about possible lift stoppages (in the end, everything kept running throughout the morning). After yesterday’s heavy rain, Routes 1, 2, 5, and 6 remained ungroomed. The upper and lower sections of Route 8 were groomed but had loosened into a soft, loose granular snow surface.

Route 3, a steep mogul run, had soft, loose, granular bumps from top to bottom, and I watched as advanced skiers dropped in one after another. I met two visitors from Chiba and Tokyo (pictured) who said, “We always read your reports. We’re not sure what Route 3 is like today, but we’re going to find out.”

Midway down Route 3 (pictured), two sections of snow had narrowed to about 2 meters wide due to exposed ground on the sides. A skier I spoke with commented, “When I was here the day before yesterday, the moguls were bigger, but yesterday’s rain seems to have knocked them down.” The slopes had a busy weekend feel, and I heard plenty of “I love Snownavi!” comments throughout the morning. Thanks to all those who stopped to greet me.
