Iwatake REPORT

2025.06.09Hakuba Iwatake / Mostly Sunny

Horse trekking at the summit—it’s something that surprisingly hadn’t been offered at Iwatake…until now! For most, the logical precursor to horse trekking is to try the lead-rein riding experience (pictured), which is an affordable and highly satisfying activity at just JPY2,000 per ride. (Participants must be over 100 cm tall and under 80 kg.) Once you have your helmet on, you use the stairs pictured in the background of the photo to mount the saddle.

The course runs approximately 220 meters round trip from the north side of the Iwatake summit area to the front of Skyark (pictured), and friends or family can walk alongside and take photos during the ride. A staff member leads the horse at a gentle pace, but once you’re on, you’ll likely find yourself using muscles you don’t normally engage to stabilize yourself—making it more of a workout than you might expect!

Today I spoke with a family of four visiting on a day trip from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, first 3 photos). “It’s our first time at Iwatake. We heard the views were amazing and wanted to see them for ourselves,” said the mother. “The scenery was beautiful, and the horseback ride was a lot of fun too.” Incidentally, lead-assisted horseback rides are held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. (closed on Wednesdays).

The area used for the YOO-HOO! FESTIVAL stage from 5/17 (Sat.) to 5/26 (Sun.) has now transformed into the Skyark Deck Café (pictured). In addition to soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, the café offers a selection of ramen, including Shinshu Miso Ramen (regular JPY1,100, large JPY1,300) and Rich Shrimp Miso Ramen (regular JPY1,300, large JPY1,500). A refreshing breeze added to the pleasant atmosphere.
