On 8/5 (Tue.), Isesaki City in Gunma Prefecture recorded an astonishing 41.8 °C, far surpassing Japan’s previous all-time high. Earlier, on 8/3 (Sun.), Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture also hit a record 39.0 °C. In contrast, the summit of Mt. Iwatake remained delightfully cool—thanks to rain from Wednesday, August 6 through this morning. During a ride on South Lift Line 5 (photo), a strong southerly breeze swept through, offering a refreshingly pleasant sensation.

A family from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured) told us, “We’ve skied here many times in winter, but this is our first summer visit to Hakuba. It’s so refreshingly cool, and our little pup is absolutely loving it!” With abundant shade around the Mt. Iwatake summit, in the Nezuko-no-mori Forest, and throughout Hitotoki-no-mori, you can stay comfortable even when the sun’s rays grow stronger.

Sky Trampoline, located in the plaza in front of Sky Ark, is open daily through 8/31 (Sun.) (closed Tuesdays, except 8/12). Sessions are available for ages three and up at ¥1,500 per turn. While trying it out, mother of a girl from Fukuoka (pictured) told us, “We flew from Fukuoka to Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport in an hour and a half, then drove another hour and a half to Hakuba—so we made it here in about three hours, much faster than we thought. We’ve already created so many summer vacation memories!”

At the entrance to the beech forest on the summit, a limited‐time “Tree Climbing Experience” is available from 8/4 (Mon.) through 8/24 (Sun.) (includes climbing gear rental; ¥2,500). A staff member told us, “We want as many visitors as possible to try it and enjoy the view from high up in the summit trees!” After receiving instruction on climbing techniques and a safety briefing, participants can climb for 20 minutes.
