Iwatake REPORT

2023.02.28180cm / Sunny

The demonstration disciplines of the 50th Annual ALL Japan Student Ski Competition (Iwatake) are being held on the Village Side of the resort from 2/26 (Sun.) to 3/3 (Fri.). The opening ceremony was held on 2/26 (Sun.), while the preliminary round of the men’s individual performances was held yesterday, 2/27 (Mon.) Today, 2/28 (Tue.), the competition round for the men’s individual category began at 9:00 a.m., with the women’s individual competition starting at 10:00 a.m.

The various disciplines taking place in different locations were all cheered loudly by the audience watching them compete. The temperature rose rapidly during the morning, and with the sun shining strongly, the slopes began to soften up and the snow became slushy and coarse by 9:00 a.m. I spoke with a member of the competition committee, who told me, “It must be difficult for the participants to deal with these conditions.”

It was sunny, warm, and windless weather on the Mountain Side as well by 9:00 a.m. The Sawa Course (pictured) was groomed with a well-packed, wet snow surface, while the ungroomed HIKAGE slope had a hard, uneven surface. The East Slope had the best conditions this morning, with a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface that had the feeling of powder.

The South Slope was groomed with hard-packed wet snow. I was greeted by a skier from Sendai University’s Team Nishikigoi (pictured, left) and another from Seikei University’s Demonstration Skiing Club (pictured, right), who told me, “We love your site! It’s nice to finally meet a reporter from Snownavi. We’ll do our best in the competition!” In the morning, many athletes who were set to participate in the competitions were getting in some practice runs to get accustomed to the terrain and conditions.
