Iwatake REPORT

2026.05.02Hakuba Iwatake / Sunny

The difference between early May this year and last is obvious. With the snow melting earlier this season, by 5/2 (Sat.), fresh green foliage had already started to emerge across the surrounding area. As is often the case, the Yoo-Hoo! Swing drew steady crowds right from the start of the morning (pictured, ¥1,000 for two people). Tickets are sold by time slot at a vending machine in front of the Guide Center, which keeps waiting times short. There is also a designated space to tie up dogs while riding (a dog is visible behind the swing support in the photo).

Riding a mountain cart, buggy, or MTB from the summit (the Hakuba Iwatake MTB PARK opened on 4/29) makes the openness, scale, and fresh spring air on the mountain feel even more pronounced. For those who are unfamiliar, mountain carts are non-motorized and controlled entirely by braking (pictured, ¥2,000 including helmet, goggles, and protective gear rental).

At Hakuba Hitotoki-no-Mori, visitors relaxed in chairs and enjoyed activities such as slacklining, ring toss, and teqball, all of which are free to use. As seen in the back left of the photo, a “Scenic Relaxation Yoga” session was in progress (free, 30-minute sessions at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.; also scheduled for 5/3, 5/4, 5/5, 5/16, and 5/17).

Guided horseback riding (pictured, right, ¥3,000) began on 4/25 (Sat.), which means nearly all activities are already on offer. The buggy cruise (pictured left, ¥2,000 for adults, ¥1,000 for ages 4 through elementary school, pets free) is currently running three vehicles at full capacity. In other news, the major annual event, the “HAKUBA Yoo-Hoo! FESTIVAL,” is now just two weeks away.
