The technical alpine categories of the 50th Annual All Japan Student Ski Competition are being held on the Kamoshika Course from 3/12 (Sun.) to 3/17 (Fri.). I spoke with a student (pictured) from Yokohama City University, who told me, “I love your site. I’m finally here competing in my senior year! I tore ligaments in my knee during my freshman year, couldn’t ski at all during my sophomore year, started rehabilitation in earnest in my junior year, and now here I am! Of course, I wanted to make it through the tournament, but I’m also happy just to be able to compete!”

It was a calm, sunny morning with clouds scattered across the sky. The cold had returned a little, and the trees around the summit were lightly covered with rime ice. The groomed Sawa Course (pictured) had a moderately firm, granular snow surface. There were some areas of of exposed soil dirt on the slope, but there were no areas where the groomed snow cover was thin.

The South Slope (pictured) had moderately packed, groomed granular snow that began to soften and slush after about 30 minutes. It was similar spring conditions on the Sunny Valley Course, which had thinning snow near the junction with the White Ribbon Course and at the end of the course (the lower part of the old Paradise Course), but I was still able to ski down without scratching my skis.

I met a skier from Korea (pictured), who told me, “I check your site occasionally. I’m staying and skiing in Hakuba for two weeks, and am planning to come back next year as well.” The granular snow surface of the groomed VIEW D was moderately firm in the shaded sections, and moderately soft in the sun. There were areas of thin snow cover at the end of the run, but it was skiable without issue.
