Things are now quieter and calmer at Alps-Daira after the lively Obon holiday period, and with the crisp air, the drifting clouds, and the morning sunlight today, I could feel the arrival of autumn. The major peaks to the east—Mt. Myoko, Mt. Togakushi, Mt. Azumaya, and Mt. Asama—looked stunning as clouds trailed across them, and I found myself turning back more often than usual to take in the view while climbing.

At the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden, the ground was carpeted with numerous Hakusan-furo (pictured) in bloom. In the middle to upper areas of the graden, clusters of karaito-so appeared here and there. Yamahahako, Hakusan-shajin, Takane matsumushi-so, Shinano nadeshiko, oyama soba, and choji-giku were also blooming beautifully, adding vibrant splashes of color to the trails.

Climbing up to the Jizo Cairn, the air felt even fresher and more invigorating. Along the Alps-Daira Nature Trail, the standout flowers were tamura-so, Hakusan-shajin, waremoko, Happo usuyuki-so, and akabana shimotsuke-so. By the way, this summer I’ve noticed that quite a number of men and women have been frequently using sun umbrellas even at higher elevations.
