Happo-one REPORT

2023.04.10185cm / Sunny

I was looking forward to enjoying the fresh snow that fell on 4/8 (Sat.), but… on the morning of 4/9 (Sun.), the gondola was suspended due to strong winds, and the venue for “the Hakuba Happo-One Spring Festival” was also moved to the area in front of the base station (pictured). The event talk show featuring Akito & Yoshito Watabe as well as Aiko Uemura started with stories about their school days and continued to topics like their participation in the World Cup and Olympics, and information about their environmental activities.

The first prize in the raffle, a set of HEAD ski and bindings, was won by a girl from Ishikawa Prefecture (pictured, third from left). Other great prizes included HEAD goggles, a wheeled elan bag, a DESCENTE backpack, and a Hummel Boston bag. (Pictured here on the far left is Yoshito Watabe, with Aiko Uemura to his right.)

On the following day, 4/10 (Mon.), I was thrilled to see the slopes covered in a fresh blanket of white. I spoke with a group of three guests (pictured) from Hyogo, Mie, and Tokyo, with the snowboarder pictured in the center telling me, “Today I came to see my uncle from Mie Prefecture (pictured, far right). Actually, I ran into you at Nozawa Onsen on 4/8 (Sat.), didn’t I? My picture didn’t make it into your report on that day, so please include me this time.”

I also ran into a skier (pictured), who playfully told me, “Snownavi reporters are always the one taking pictures, but today I’m going to snap your photo.” Later on, two skiers from Tokyo and Nagano Prefecture commented, “Your reports are always full of photos of young people. You should feature old guys from time to time, too (lol). Yesterday, the gondola was closed until noon because of strong winds, but today conditions are great, especially on the Kurobishi Slope.” I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the groomed, fine-grained granular snow surface.
