Happo-one REPORT

2023.12.01100cm / Sunny

The cold temperatures intensified overnight and into to the morning today, bringing light snow that totaled between 6 and 8cm. It was a picturesque morning with fantastic views of the alpenglow dyeing the ice-covered trees and slopes from the base of the resort (pictured, 6:50 a.m.). The copious snowfall that began on 11/28 (Tue.) has left the entire ski resort completely covered in a blanket of white, and hopes are high for more terrain to open up, but at least for this week one only the Panorama Course will be open.

I spoke to a ski patroller this morning who told me, “We have a lot of snow on the slopes. We’re waiting for people to come and enjoy the great early season conditions.” I couldn’t help but get excited as I stepped out onto the slope and heard the familiar squeak of the immaculately groomed packed powder surface. The entire north side of the Panorama Course (pictured) and an area groomed to the width of one grooming machine on the south side had perfect powder conditions! (The base on the north side is fantastic and is groomed especially flat!)

I crossed paths with two people from Nagoya that mentioned, “We saw the Snownavi report from yesterday and quickly took paid time off to come and ski today.” I also heard from another group of two from the town of Ikeda in Nagano and Tajimi City in Gifu who commented how great the new natural snow felt, and how well their edges gripped and skis slid across it.

With few people on the slopes, fresh corduroy patterns remained on the groomed areas for a long time. I did venture into the ungroomed area on the south side of the Kokusai 3 Pair and enjoyed the feeling of the fluffy powder. The snow that has fallen since the night before last has remained dry, and when I took off my skis and put one foot on the snow to test it, I found myself in knee-deep snow with almost no resistance.
