Whether or not Cortina will be “fully open” soon (i.e., more than 80% of all resort terrain is skiable) hinges on when the Third Quad goes into operation. Skies were calm and clear this morning, and with the 10 to 15cm of new snow that fell overnight, I took an early run on the ungroomed Hiedayama Course 1 (pictured). Even while bottoming out on the soft base, I enjoyed the feeling of the fluffy fresh snow. [Hiedayama Course 1]

I spoke with a snowboarder from Matsumoto (pictured), who told me, “I’m a fan of your site. I love Cortina and often come here to board with friends or even alone. The weather is amazing today!” I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns on the moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface of the Hiedayama Rinkan Course.

The groomed powder surface of the Ipponmatsu Course was moderately firm. There were still a few heads of tall grass visible through the snow at the end of the course, but it didn’t hinder the skiing, and I was able to ski fast and fun runs. I was impressed by the impeccable carving turns of the Cortina Ski and Snowboard School instructors (pictured) first thing this morning.

The Ikenota Slope (pictured) had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface that was mostly free of bushes, and safe and comfortable to ski. There I ran into a family from Kanazawa (pictured) who commented, “We’re staying and skiing at Cortina for three days. It’s our first time to stay at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba, and we love the food and hot spring.”
