Thanks to the big dump everyone’s been waiting for, the Olympic Course II, Kitaone Course, Central Course, Shirakaba Slope, and Nakiyama Slope have all reopened, and Happo is now “fully open” (more than 80% of resort terrain is open) for the first time since 12/30 (Sat.)! This morning it was blizzard-like conditions on the upper portion of the ski resort, which prevented the Alpen Quad and the lifts above the Skyline 2 from running.

Overall I’ve been impressed by how the resort has been operated in recent years, but on a day like today I wished they would have been able to get the gondola running on time. Instead, I headed for the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured), where I found 40 to 45cm of fresh snow in the ungroomed areas, and fully enjoyed the feeling of powder and the sensation of floating.

The groomed snow from the top through the middle portion of Riesen was easy to ski, with 10 to 15cm of fluffy covering a moderately firm powder snow base. The groomed wet snow at the end of Riesen (pictured) was topped with a thin layer of new snow. I couldn’t help but be impressed by the snow-covered landscape at the foot of the mountain, which had transformed overnight.

There was 10 to 15cm of fresh snow on the Panorama Course, which had a reasonably firm, groomed powder snow surface, and 40 to 45cm of new snow atop the hard packed tracks and moguls of the Olympic Course II! There was almost no trace of exposed brush, so skiers could ski down to the bottom of the resort without any concerns.
