Happo-one REPORT

2023.12.30115cm / Sunny

Between 7:00 and 7:15 a.m., the Northern Alps and the slopes of Happo were tinted in a soft shade of red, and created a beautiful scene in combination with the wispy low-elevation clouds. The weather has been calm and clear the last two days, and the Grat Quad has been in operation for snow tourism, winter mountaineering, and backcountry skiing since yesterday at noon. (*Riesen Grat is not skiable due to the lack of snow cover and potential impact on vegetation. Mountaineering and backcountry skiing require the submission of a mountaineering plan.)

The area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and the southern route of Usagidaira were immaculately groomed with moderately firm, “powdery” wet snow conditions. The center section of the groomed Skyline Course was also easy to ski, with a firm, groomed wet snow base. The ungroomed areas along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair had hard-packed moguls and surface tracks.

The Panorama Course was groomed with a firm wet snow surface similar to the Skyline Course. The artificial snow along Kokusai 3 Pair was dry and soft in places, so it had no negative effect on skiing. Although visitor turnout was quick, many people headed to the Riesen Slalom Course first thing in the morning, so the Panorama Course was a nice, quiet spot for skiers and snowboarders.

On the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, the grooved depressions from the grooming machine’s crawler tracks were hardened on the surface, so care was needed not to get my skis snagged. The Sakka Slope (pictured) had hard-packed wet snow, and although it was ungroomed, it was mostly free of bushes, and had a nearly flat surface that was easier to ski than expected.
