Happo-one REPORT

2024.02.06240cm / Snow Clouds

There are probably a lot of people looking at this photo and thinking, “What?!” That’s right, even though it was the morning right after a heavy snowfall, there were not many people lined up for the Alpen Quad first thing in the morning! This may have been due to the fact that yesterday’s snow, caused by a low pressure system off the southern coast of Japan, forced the closure of the Chuo Expressway south of the Azumino Interchange and the Kanetsu Expressway. Starting off, there were only a few flakes of snow falling, and blue skies could be seen at times as the clouds overhead moved in and out.

The steep, ungroomed slope of Sodeguro (pictured) had 30 to 40 cm of fresh snow with a 1 to 2 mm of surface crust, likely caused by the relatively warm temperatures (*still below freezing) during the daytime yesterday when it was snowing heavily, followed by overnight cooling. The transition to smooth, soft snow after breaking through the crust felt strangely wonderful.

The southern route of Usagidaira was groomed with a firm powder snow surface, while the groomed base of Panorama was slightly less firm and covered in a thin layer of fresh snow. The Panorama Beginner Forest Course (pictured), which bypasses the Olympic Course II, was also groomed, but with a softer powder snow surface. The ungroomed Olympic Course II was covered in a series of medium to large, firm moguls topped by 25 to 30 cm of fluffy fresh snow.

The Shirakaba Slope (pictured) and Sakka Wave were just as easy to ski as the groomers at the top of the mountain, with moderately firm, powdery groomed snow. The widely-groomed Sakka Slope featured excellent soft powder snow conditions! All courses on the lower part of the resort were well maintained with plenty of snow cover.
