Nozawa REPORT

2024.02.28210cm / Snow Clouds

The long-awaited heavy snows have returned. While riding the Yamabiko No. 2 and Yamabiko No. 4 lifts (picture), I was so tempted by the untouched powder in the Special Self-Responsibility Area that I almost couldn’t resist. (In the end I resisted, and headed to a standard run.) The dry snow that had been falling steadily since the early morning stopped around 8:45 a.m.

The groomed Yamabiko B Course (pictured), which had unusually been groomed, had excellent conditions, with a moderately soft powder snow surface topped with 20 cm of light new snow! The feeling of floating on the soft powder was extremely pleasant, and cheers could be heard from those skiing down. A gentleman from Kanagawa Prefecture, who I rode with on Yamabiko Four (first photo), told me, “The first run on Yamabiko B felt great! … Actually, every run feels great today, doesn’t it? I’m glad I came.”

Yamabiko A (pictured) had a moderately soft, groomed powder snow surface, while the groomed powder bases of Yamabiko C and D were packed somewhat more firmly. Each was delightful thanks to the feeling of the 2 cm of light, fresh snow that my skis smoothly cut through. The groomed Kokenashi Slope (pictured), Uenotaira Slope, Paradise Slope, and Schneider Course also had moderately packed, easy-to-ski powder snow conditions.

I spoke with a man from Saitama Prefecture (pictured) that said, “Snownavi is linked on Nozawa Onsen’s official website, and I use it to check your reports. I’m looking forward to more updates.” Afterwards, he dropped into the halfpipe, and I could not believe he was almost 70 years old as I watched him board. In other news, a Winter Lantern Night Festival will be held on 3/2 (Sat.), and and the Ishii Sports 2024-25 NEW MODEL Ski Test Ride & SAVREQ Experience will be held over two days on 3/2 (Sat.) and 3/3 (Sun.).
