Shiga REPORT

2024.03.13210cm / Snowy

I spoke with four visitors from Aichi and Gifu (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! We got some good new snow! We took the day off from work to come here for these conditions.” A Sunvalley staff member added, “We got about 50 cm. Lift operation will likely be delayed, but we are going to open the Hosaka Quad.” I was thrilled to see the smooth, fully-reset slopes spreading out below my feet as I rode the Hosaka Quad, which started moving at 9:05 a.m.

The Sunvalley A + Shirakuma Course (pictured) had about 50 cm of fluffy fresh snow, and I enjoyed fantastic float without bottoming out! A skier from Nagano City who joined me on the lift (pictured in red, third photo) remarked, “I love your site. I was worried because the snow at home this morning was wet, but thankfully not at Shiga Kogen!”

The densely-falling dry snow was fine, but the winds gusting from the west from time to time were tremendous! The wind caused Yokoteyama, Shibutoge, and Terakoya to be closed for the entire day, and other gondolas and lifts were also affected. I enjoyed the moderately packed, groomed powder slopes on the Sunvalley B + Main Course, Maruike B Course, and Maruike C Course, which each had 2 to 10 cm of silky fresh snow on them.

The Maruike A Course, however, was my main goal for the day. A staff member (pictured) skiing Maruike A on his day off told me, “I have never tried to ski in snow this deep before. I’m worn out from falling down all the time.” I couldn’t resist the pleasure of the fresh snow, which was more than 50 cm deep, and went back up via the Maruike First Triple for seconds.
