Shiga REPORT

2024.04.23160cm / Cloudy

Yokoteyama Ski Resort is still skiable from the summit to the base area! I spoke with a staff member working at the Second Sky Lift, who told me, “I hope the snow holds up so we can continue skiing after Golden Week…but I’m worried about the rain.” Yokoteyama and Shibutoge are scheduled to stay open until mid-May.

The Second Slope (first photo) was still relatively white, and had great groomed conditions, with a loose granular snow surface. On the other hand, Shibutoge (pictured), which was enveloped in thick fog due to the direction of the slope, the snow surface was noticeably dirty. One skier I met said, “I’m heading back to the parking lot to re-wax my skis since they’re not sliding very well.”

In other news, Route 292 between Shiga and Kusatsu, which was closed during the winter, will be open to traffic starting tomorrow, 4/24 (Wed.) at 10:00 a.m. (*The vehicle pictured is from the Yamanouchi Town Office). The road opening will allow direct access to Shiga Kogen from the Gunma side. During Golden Week, not only Yokoteyama, but also Shibutoge will be open early in the morning from 6:00 a.m., and visitors can also drive to the Shibutoge parking lot.

Shibutoge’s skiable courses, Gemut and Downhill Piedmont, were both groomed with loose granular snow surfaces. I ran into a skier from Nagano City (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! I crossed paths with you here last year, too. It’s nice to see you again this year. With this much snow, I’m sure there will be plenty left for Golden Week.”

*The snow depth listed at the top of this report is the highest reported throughout the Shiga Kogen area. Currently, that amount of 160 cm is at Kumanoyu, while Yokoteyama・Shibutoge has 140 cm.
