Happo-one REPORT

2024.04.28120cm / Sunny

Today, 4/28 (Sun.), was a warm and sunny morning at Happo with bright blue skies, and national meteorological data recorded summer temperatures (25℃ or above) across more than half of the country, with midsummer temperatures (30℃ or above) occurring in two locations. The open slopes of Usagidaira (pictured) and Kurobishi had loose granular snow right from the morning. Visitors turned out early, and deep tracks were carved into the groomed slopes in quick succession.

I spoke with a skier from Shiga Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “I love your site! I’m skiing in Happo today and tomorrow, and again from the 2nd to the 4th of May. I’m thankful that there is still snow during Golden Week this season.” I also had a conversation with an instructor from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School, who remarked, “The snow is soft, but skis slide well on these conditions. The ski school is open during Golden Week, and we work hard to deliver a quality lesson. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone.”

After that, the strong sunshine made it feel hotter and hotter, and I was sweating a lot. On days like this, I find myself craving a Corona (Corona Extra, pictured) from Restaurant Yeti. Bottles of Corona Extra are on sale until 5/6 (Mon.) at a special spring skiing price of JPY600 instead of the usual JPY800!

As for the moguls on Kurobishi, more and more exposed dirt was noticeable in the area towards the Kurobishi Quad, but it was still enjoyable near Kurobishi 3 Pair. I caught up with a father from Osaka (pictured) who told me he was a fan of Snownavi, and added, “I’m going to ski until noon today and then go to the Sea of Japan to fish for firefly squid at night.” There have been record-breaking catches of firefly squid in Toyama Bay and other parts of the country this year, and you can find large, cheap squid available at the local supermarket Tsuruya every day.
