NASPA New Otani, a member of the prestigious New Otani hotel group, which ranks alongside the Imperial Hotel and Hotel Okura as one of Japan’s “Big Three” hotels, stands here in Yuzawa. Just steps from the entrance lies the resort’s own ski area, NASPA Ski Garden, which carries the same refined atmosphere as the hotel itself. Scattered across the snow in the base area this morning were countless bright-red maple leaves, adding a beautiful splash of color to the early-season scene.

A staff member at the ski area told me, “We didn’t expect this much snow. If you’d like, you can take a look at the freshly whitened slopes from one of the hotel rooms,” and kindly guided me inside. The view from the top floor was spectacular. As for the snow, about 20 cm of new snow had accumulated on the lower slopes since yesterday.
