Madarao Kogen Ski Resort, which opened for the season on 12/13 (Sat.), is currently operating two lifts—the No. 1 Triple and No. 2 Quad—with 10 courses open for skiing and riding: Paradise (pictured), Beginner A & B, Utopia, Shirakaba, lower Champion, Carving, lower Giant, Pole Course A, and the FreeRide Park. This morning, fine, high-density snowfall continued through the morning, steadily refreshing the slopes and giving the resort a full-on wintry feel.

“Honestly, we were hoping for more snowfall,” was the comment from a resort staff member I met. After parking in Parking Lot No. 1 and heading out onto Paradise, I found that the slope featured a firm, well-compacted base of moist groomed snow topped with about 5 to 10 cm of slightly wet fresh snowfall. Through the steadily falling snow and thick fog, laughter carried across the slope, along with comments like, “Ahh, I can’t see anything!”

At the base area, I spoke with a group of four guests from Osaka (pictured), who said, “We check Snownavi from time to time. The fog is really limiting visibility today. We’ll definitely be checking today’s report since we’ll probably be in it!” On the lower Giant Course, around 10 cm of moist fresh snow sat on top of a firmly groomed, moist snow base, creating solid conditions underfoot.

The Carving Course (pictured) is lined with trees on both sides, which made it easy to pick a line and provided a little more confidence when skiing despite the limited visibility. On the skier’s right side of the lower Giant Course, the FreeRide Park made an early appearance starting today, and featured three items in total: two 4-meter PVC features and one 6-meter rail.
