The registration deadline for the 80th Annual Hakuba Happo-One Riesen Slalom Competition, scheduled for 2/26 (Thu.) & 2/27 (Fri.), is tomorrow, 1/6 (Tue.)! Turning to conditions this morning, steady snowfall continued across the upper slopes with calm, windless conditions. On Riesen, 3 to 5cm of new snow sat on top of the groomed surface, and the upper section (pictured) featured a firm powder base, while the mid to lower sections had a firm, wet-snow surface.

Dropping into the Tenbo Course (pictured) for the first time this season, I found more new snow than expected—around 20 to 25cm. I did bottom out on the moderately firm underlying rollers, but still enjoyed the soft, buoyant feel. Well-set bumps and moguls had formed along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and beside the Alpen Quad, where about 25cm of fluffy new snow had accumulated.

Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and on the lower section of the south-side route at Usagidaira, the base was moderately firm, groomed powder topped with 10 to 15cm of light new snow. A skier from Hakuba Village told me, “I always follow your reports. I didn’t expect this much snow—I came on my carving skis, but I really should have gone with semi-fat or all-mountain skis today.”

The central section of the Skyline Course and the area along the Kita-One 3 Pair also skied well, with about 10cm of light new snow sitting on a moderately firm, groomed powder base—much like conditions along the Kurobishi Quad. In the ungroomed sections of Skyline, a well-set rolling surface was covered by around 20cm of new snow. Around 9:30 a.m., the snowfall picked up even more.
