This morning I met a skier from Osaka (pictured) who utilized the S-CLASS service to reach the top before 8:00 a.m. They told me, “I always read your reports! I’m staying at Lodge Tsurara, where I spent a lot of time back in my student days, from 1/7 (Wed.) to 2/23 (Fri.) and enjoying plenty of skiing. When I was younger, I even competed in student races.” Despite the thicker cloud cover, it was a calm, crisp, and refreshing morning.

The South Slope and East Slope (pictured) both offered easy-to-ski conditions, with moderately firm, groomed moist snow surfaces. Most guests who arrived by gondola in the morning flowed straight onto the South Slope, which meant the East Slope stayed quiet, and I was able to enjoy fresh, clean corduroy for quite some time.

VIEW D (pictured), like the East Slope, featured moderately firm groomed moist snow, and because the steeper sections of the run are wide, I was able to ski freely without being encumbered by beginners stopping on the slope. Meanwhile, the big annual event, the Iwatake Thanks Fair, will be held in the base area starting at 10:00 a.m. on 1/24 (Sat.). This year’s event will once again feature generous food offerings such as a giant pot of pork soup, along with a lottery packed with prizes.

HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR was bustling today, especially with international visitors, as the sweet aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the air. A staff-recommended favorite is the Maple Bacon Biscuit (¥520), which perfectly balances maple sweetness with savory bacon. The Chocolate Chunk Cookie (¥520) and the Black Tea & Chocolate Biscuit (¥520) are also popular choices.
