The ever-popular, annual winter event, the “Lotte Presents Snow Sports Day,” took place again this year. With no registration required and free participation—plus a packed lineup of activities—the 11 a.m. session alone drew an impressive 175 participants (additional sessions were also held at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.). From the very first event, “Dizzy Snow Flags” (pictured), where participants spin around several times with a bat pressed to their forehead before dashing off to grab a flag, the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement.

The next event, “Snowball Toss” (pictured), split participants into red and blue teams, with children competing in the first round and adults taking over in the second, tossing snowballs to see which team could score more. The MC was Ryotsu Saito, a well-known radio personality. The snow that had been falling since the morning had mostly eased, and the chilly but comfortable temperatures made for perfect conditions for an outdoor snow sports day.

This was followed by the “Snowball Rolling Relay” (fourth photo), “Snow Tug-of-War,” and “Snow Treasure Hunt.” In the Snowball Rolling Relay, participants again divided into red and blue teams, working in pairs to roll a giant snowball back and forth along the course before handing it off to the next team. Winners of each of the five events received Lotte sweets as prizes (pictured), and to wrap things up, all participants were treated to “Hot Ghana”—a warm drink made by melting Ghana chocolate into milk.

The same event will be held again on 3/7 (Sat.), and at Iwappara on 2/8 (Sun.) and 3/8 (Sun.). On weekends without the Snow Sports Day through 3/29 (Sun.), the “Kids Triathlon” is scheduled for children aged 3 through 4th grade. Earlier in the day, I skied the Panorama No. 2 and No. 3 Slopes before the events, and both offered groomed wet snow that was moderately firm and had a pleasant powdery feel.
