This morning, I met a family who were first on the Rabbit Course (pictured), and they told me, “We always read your reports. We’re car camping and skiing at different resorts between 2/12 (Thu.) and 2/14 (Sat.). We make it to Cortina at least once a year. The weather and the views are incredible today!” With calm, sunny skies, the intense sunshine quickly sent temperatures climbing.

Both the Rabbit Course (pictured) and the Snake Course were groomed into firmly set, fine-grained corn snow. With edges biting cleanly and skis running fast, it was the kind of surface that made me want to lap the No. 3 Quad. On the ungroomed Kamoshika Course, a firm, uneven base and moguls had formed across the slope.

I also spoke with a father from Osaka Prefecture, who said, “My kids (pictured) aren’t interested in skiing or sledding—they’re just happy playing in the snow here. We’re trying to build a snow cave, but the snow’s so firm it’s hard to dig. I’d really like to go skiing, though…” At the neatly groomed Kids’ Park, sleds were running fast and smooth. The Ikenota Slope also had groomed, fine-grained corn snow surface that allowed for fast, satisfying turns. Visitors got an early start today, and by around 9:30 a.m., the No. 2 Quad already had a short wait of three to four minutes. Night skiing at Ikenota will be held on Saturdays in February and on 2/22 (Sun.) (5:00 to 9:00 p.m.; adults ¥2,500, elementary school students ¥1,500).
