The rain that began falling yesterday morning stopped overnight. A patroller I spoke with this morning said, “We thought the snow would easily last through Golden Week, but with the high temperatures, plus the rain and wind, melting has accelerated quickly.” A light easterly breeze was blowing today, and the dense fog that had been sitting over the upper slopes gradually began to clear.

Along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair (pictured), the groomed, granular snow surface was soft. From the mid to lower sections, patches of exposed dirt had narrowed the usable width of the run, but I was able to ski all the way down to the lift base without damaging my skis.

The Tsuga No. 2 Pair, which had been closed for maintenance from 4/21 (Tue.) to 4/23 (Thu.), reopened today, and the newer snowmaking systems that ran during the peak season have made a difference. Snow coverage was better than I expected on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope, but the groomed, granular surface softened noticeably within about 30 minutes.

On the ungroomed Gotemba Course, surface dirt was noticeable and the snow did not run well. The amount of snow at TG PARKS has also dropped, but both the main park along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair (pictured) and the hike-up park in front of the Tsuga-no-mori Rest House were cleanly maintained. (Tsugaike still has plenty to offer).
