Happo-one REPORT

2023.01.27290cm / Snow Clouds

Due to the occurrence of the La Nina phenomenon again this year (*as announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency), unusually abundant snow was expected for the season, but until 1/24 (Tue.), there was very little snowfall throughout Japan. However, the situation changed radically thanks to the arrival of a major cold air mass on 1/25 (Wed.). This morning, the rime ice covering the trees on the upper portion of the ski area was a sight to behold, and dry snow was falling silently on the slopes.

The southern route of Usagidaira was groomed with a moderately firm, powder snow surface, and as I entered the Sodeguro area, I was pleasantly surprised to find between 20 and 25 cm of new snow. The soft base combined with the light, fresh snow made for easy turns, and an exciting run on fluffy powder! The cheers from other visitors around me made it obvious that I wasn’t the only one enjoying the conditions.

The groomed Panorama course (pictured) was also in fantastic shape! The powder snow surface was moderately firm, and the 2 to 3cm of light, fresh snow that topped things off made for the type of conditions you want to do repeat laps on. In other news, applications for the first round of entries for the 2023 HAPPO BANKED SLALOM competition to be held on 2/25 (Sat.) are being accepted until 2/2 (Thurs.)!!

There was 10 to 15cm of new snow covering the well-packed moguls on the steep slope at the top half of the Olympic Course II. The second half of the Olympic Course II (pictured), as well as the Shirakaba Slope, featured firmly-groomed powder snow. The snow that had been falling early in the morning had almost completely stopped by around 9:00.
